Generally, when an office has become cramped or old looking, there are two courses of action that the company can take. Either they can move to larger, more pristine facilities or they can choose to have the existing office refurbished. Other factors can influence a decision to move, but in most cases, especially where the location and condition of the building is good, an office refurb is the best choice. The amount of work involved in interior design space planning is quite substantial. The process itself involves at least one onsite visit from the interior designer before any actual work begins. That visit, along with the detailed discussion on what is desired, helps the designer to get an idea of the office character, and the business itself, as well as providing the chance to take photos of the actual space. Availing of the services of an experienced project manager, whether it be to help moving office or organising the refurb, is a good idea, for several reasons. Free Up Staff If a project manager is not chosen, the alternative is for the parent company to choose a member of staff to oversee everything. But this causes a couple of problems. Firstly, the individual could be helping the company make money in his or her usual capacity, which is far more benefiting when compared to overseeing a project that costs money. Secondly, the individual delegated the job is unlikely to have the necessary experience, meaning that a large number of small aspects that require attention could go neglected. Planning even a home move is intricate enough but, with an office, timing is of the essence when it could mean working hours and productivity lost. In the case of a refurb project, there needs to be full harmony between all the constituent contractors and subcontractors. Having one set of eyes overseeing everything means a greater degree of accuracy. Liaise Between the Active It is always preferable that the move or refurb project be completed in as short a period of time as possible, but that does not mean a rushed job is acceptable. While an office move might take several days, depending on the logistics and schedule involved, a refurb will take longer. Over that time, several different groups will play their part, from the moving company transporting equipment, to the subcontractors carrying out specific parts of the refurb project, as well as individual suppliers. A project manager within the interior design industry will have a very intricate knowledge of how to deal with every situation. Their skills in liaising between the different players should ensure that there are the absolute minimum of delays possible. Monitor Quality and Costs With different contractors, subcontractors and suppliers involved, it would be easy to allow quality slip and costs to spiral. However, both of these aspects can be controlled if a project manager is there to check on everything that is being done. Choosing a manager experienced in commercial design means that specific problems can be handled properly and promptly, while work can be inspected as the project progresses, keeping everything running smoothly. There should, of course, be agreed contracts with the individual contractors and subcontractors before the project begins. Sticking to the terms and within the agreed budget is vital too. Regulations Compliance As part of his or her knowledge in the area, a project manager will be well aware of all the relevant building, health and safety regulations that any office refurb has to comply with. There is little need to stress just how important this area is, and so meeting standards is a must. When it comes to having a manager to help moving office, there are also regulations relating to packing, clearing and unpacking that must be adhered to. This is because even a simple incident like a member of office staff tripping over a small box can result in a compensation claim. A project manager is invaluable as he or she can take care of all of these aspects. With any interior design space planning project, there can be a variety of intricate details to handle making an experienced eye essential. And while the work is ongoing, the company staff can concentrate on what they were really hired to do.
