There are several accessories that can be used to increase the durability of ID cards. A card holder, especially if it is also attached to a high quality lanyard, is definitely the most common and probably the most effective one. Read on to discover more about such accessories, as well as about the creation process of ID cards.

There are numerous institutions that use ID cards as means of security and identification. Since more and more people receive ID cards from their jobs, and they have to take care of them, ID card holders have become extremely popular. The small holders maintain the integrity of the card and ensure that it does not get lost either. A neck lanyard can also be used, instead of a card holder, for those who prefer it. However, most people stick to using card holders as they are smaller and more practical. Larger institutions and corporations tend to provide the holder themselves, while smaller institutions who could not, or would not, purchase their own ID card printer have to purchase the holders, just like they have to purchase the services of a company that creates ID cards.

The creation process is not quite as easy as it seems, even though numerous people seem to think that an ID card is just a piece of photo paper with certain information printed onto it. The ID card is first created in special software used for creating ID card templates. This software is used to create everything from the background of the card, to the photo ID and the overall look of the card.

Then a special printer is used to print the template created in the software. Some companies have older printers and use outdated techniques that do not allow them to print all the elements on the card at the same time. They have to first create a blank template of the card, and then use that to add elements on top of it. This does not make the elements an integral part of the card, as it does for companies that use modern techniques.

These techniques allow each and every detail of the card to become a part of it. After this is complete, the lamination process begins, for extra durability. After the card is laminated, dirt and water will no longer affect it, as they will simply slide off the protective cover. This is an excellent protection for those who are careless with their cards and end up throwing them in all the wrong places, where they are prone to damage. Cards that are not laminated do not even reach half of the life span of laminated cards, so the cost is certainly worth it.

Besides ID cards, access cards are also very popular among high security corporations and institutions. These cards are used to provide access to specific areas of the building, usually areas restricted only to workers. Access cards are thicker than ID cards, and are usually carried around the neck, using a lanyard. Most of them are not laminated, so dirt can easily become a problem, but at least liquids do not seem to have a major effect on an access card.
Companies that create ID cards usually create access cards as well, but this depends on the company. Corporations interested in more than just ID cards would do well to look for companies that can create everything they need, including access cards.

Another solution would be to purchase the specialized equipment and create the ID cards in-house, but not many corporations are prepared to do this. Those extremely interested in security however consider this the only solution worth considering, as it eliminates the risk of having ID cards or templates disappear from the office of the company creating the cards.

id card holders for employees are also a wise investment, as it reduces the risk of employees losing their ID cards. This is quite common, and having a card holder has been known to reduce the number of lost cards significantly, so while the initial investment may be higher, it will save money in the end, by not forcing the company to replace the cards. A neck lanyard is also an excellent option, although these are regularly used for access cards, and some people just do not like the feeling of wearing a card attached by something around their neck.
Those interested in creating their own ID cards should remember that all it takes is a good id card printer, some free time, and specific software!
